Alentejo is inland and coast, and for this reason the gastronomy in this region of Portugal is so varied and rich in delicious products. Meats, seafood, fish, vegetables and all that goes with a mediterrenean diet with it´s delicous and healthy olive oil. To eat in this region is true pleasure. If one were to define the cuisine typical of the Alentejo region, you would say its creative, imaginative and healthy, with food produce such as olive oil and freshly baked bread accompanying all the fish, meat and seafood dishes available.
Gazpacho, dogfish soup and cod are just three of many delicious dishes available to taste in El Alentejo. In the coastal restaurants, they tend to specialise more in the mediterranean and anglosaxon diet, with pizzerias and asian/mexican restaurants more common place.
The local cheeses are also a good way of enjoying typical Alentejo produce, ably accompanied by all the varieties of rabbit, pork, veal and lamb dishes you would expect to find in Portugal.
The best wines in this region are to be found in Beja, Borba, Évora, Cartaxo, Salvaterra or Redondo. |
