Alentejo is divided by several subregions, each one with it´s important citeis, whether they be interior or coastal cities. They are tourist cities offering incredible beaches, and marvelous natural surroundings. Our tour of Alentejo begins in the coastal area where we find cities such as Sines, Santiago do Cacém, Vila Nova de Santo André and Odemira among others. There are approximately 100,000 inhabitants in this area. Odemira is the location of the important touristic municipality of Zambujeira do Mar.
Central Alentejo has a population of around 200,000 mainly living in cities such as Evora, Portel, Montenor and Novo. In this region there is excellent gastronomy, lots of culture and many interesting buildings and monuments to visit while you are on holiday.
Continuing our tour of the main cities of Alentejo we arrive at the area of Alto Alentejo with cities such as Monforte, Portalegre, Mora, Nisa, Castelo de Vide and Ponte de Sor. This area has a poulation of just over 100,000 inhabitants. From here we go down to Bajo Alentejo, the most extensive subregion of the province, with a population of 150,000 inhabitants. The most important cities here are Moura, Serpa, Cuba, Castro verde, Beja, Alvito and Barrancos.
Lastly we arrive in Leziria do Tejo, the most densely populated area in the region with 250,000 inhabitants living in citites such as Santarém, Salvaterra de Magos, Cartaxo, Azambuja and Rio Maior. |
