The region of Alentejo is located in the center south of Portugal, just above from the Algarve. In this region we´ll find cities such as Setubal, Portalegre, Beja wich borders with the Algarve in the south and with Lisboa to the north, with the Atlantic Ocean to the west and Spain to it´s east. Alentejo is a region that extends over 30,000 squared kilometers and it´s population is around 1 million inhabitants. This region is divided into several zones; central Alentejo, Coastal Alentejo, High Alentejo, Low Alentejo and the zone of Lezíria do tejo. There are more than 50 municipalities in this region, where tourism is one of the main sources of income. Cities such as Cacém, Sines, Portalegre and Setúbal are all full of apartments, rural houses, chalets, beach front houses, hotels and all kinds of holiday accomodation.
The region of Alentejo sits on plain land, and does not have many hilly areas. The tranquility and peacefulness of the zone makes it a great place for a relaxing holiday within a landscape of cork trees, olive groves and ancient stone walls.
One of the main tourist centres is the area of Zambujeira do Mar, but also worth remembering are places like Évora, with its Roman ruins and aroma of history, and Setúbal, with its beaches, hotels and apartments.
It goes without saying that visitors should not miss trying the delicacies of fish and sea food from this region of Portugal, a region that looks to the sea and to the land, but above all looks to the past, and carefully maintains one of the richest gastronomical heritages in the world.
Sports, cultural tourism, birdwatching, ecological tourism, sun and beaches, surfing, hiking, kitesurfing, the natural parks of the Southwest, the fabulous Alentejo gastronomy...the attractions of this region are many and varied. A little paradise offering cities such as Sines, Évora, Odemira and Setúbal, the natural beauty of sand dunes and long white beaches, and a wealth of history.
Come and enjoy a holiday in Alentejo!!! |
