The history of Alentejo, Portugal goes hand in hand with the history of the Iberian Penninsula, from the old Hispania and the eras of the romans, arabs and christians. In many points of Alentejo you´ll find proof of phoenician civilizations from 3000 year ago. Phoenicians, Celtics, and Romans all left an important legacy in the time before Christ in the region of Alentejo. A land in which culture and tradition went hand in hand. The Romans perhaps left the most important legacy with scriptures, mosaics, cities in ruins, monuments and so much more. However we mustn´t forget that older civilizations walked through these lands and left important monuments like the Dolmens.
After the Romans, the visigoths, arabs that filled our land with the smell of jasmine, before the reconquering which brought with it the building of many castles, some of them built over mosques, fortresses that protected the city and cities that began to grow.
From that era until today, Alentejo, Portugal has continued to grow based on it´s agriculture, livestock, fishing, and cork industry. From the last century until today with tourism growing along the coast and the interior rural tourism, Alentejo has become a very interesting and attractive offer for those of you needing rest and relaxation. |
